Sitting in Easter Saturday
An invitation to sit in Easter Saturday.
On Easter Saturday I spoke at an evening prayer vigil at Drouin Anglican Church. I was honoured to be asked t speak at such a sacred time.
I was inspired to speak about sitting in Saturday. Not jumping too quickly to Sunday. The joy and celebration of Jesus resurrection.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:6, 7)
I started with this passage, which is usually heard during Christmas season.
It’s the promise of the kingdom of justice and righteousness, which Jesus will establish when he returns. An end to all oppression, injustice and suffering. This promise is confirmed in Jesus’ resurrection.
I’m often overwhelmed by the injustice and suffering in the world. This promise that is in the of the coming kingdom of justice and righteousness is my only hope. I have great joy on Easter Sunday and at Christmas time.
Jesus has resurrected!! But he hasn’t returned yet. He has sealed his victory over injustice. But he hasn’t fulfilled it yet.
I wonder if, for you, there is an invitation…to sit in Saturday. To sit in silence…in the waiting…in…prayer…in grief.
Jesus is coming
But today there’s still famine
Still empty bellies
Still minors being sold
Still workers being exploited
Still exclusion being overlooked
There is hope
and we still wait
