10 Years at CBM - Passion Continues
It was twelve years ago when my heart broke. I was volunteering for CBM Australia’s local initiative Luke 14, which promotes disability inclusion in Australian churches.
I began to learn about CBM’s work overseas. About the situation for many people with disabilities who live in low to middle income countries. They often face barriers to accessing education, employment and to fully participating in their communities. These barriers can be a lack of physical access, or an absence of diverse forms of communication, such as braille or sign language. Stigma and discrimination from within the community is perhaps the densest barrier people with disabilities face to accessing their community and reaching their potential.
I was guttered as I realised that the opportunities I had grown up with were not available to everyone who has a disability. I’ve been through mainstream education and bible college. I’ve been able to develop as an artist and I have a job. I am valued and loved by friends and family.
CBM works alongside people with disabilities in some of the poorest communities on earth to improve their quality of life.
I remember sitting on the steps on the back deck thinking the world needs CBM.
I was compelled to advocate for people with disabilities who live in low to middle income countries.
Twelve years on, I’m still as passionate about CBM’s work. I’m proud to have received my 10-years-of-service certificate which sits on a display table in my home.
Nowadays I think – the world needs development organisations, governments and Organisations of People with Disabilities to work together to ensure inclusion in all efforts to improve the well-being of communities.
I’m still compelled to advocate!
